Idiots and liars

March 2nd, 2007

We all know, of course, that politicians tend to fall into the categories of “idiot” or “liar”. I’m sure there are other variations, warmonger, perhaps.

So which one does Treasury chief secretary Stephen Timms fit in?

He states “What the Chancellor’s been saying for a long time now is that public sector pay rises need to be consistent with our inflation target, which is 2%.” as justification for some of the shockingly small payrises awarded to Nurses (2%) and GPs (0%).

He doesn’t, I notice, point out that some public sector workers are actually getting 9.2%.

I don’t doubt that our boys abroad are doing a good job, and they deserve to be paid for fighting in a pointless, endless war, but surely nurses, for example, are equally important?

In a decent, fair society, there shouldn’t be any need for charity - everyone should make sure everyone else is okay. But of course, Mr “I want to leave a legacy when I finally piss off out of Down Street” probably doesn’t realise that.

So I’m saddened, but also happy to see Nurses, if no-one else, getting assistance from an unexpected quarter.

Mayday For Nurses
