“Vested Interest”?

Triple play

I’ve been busy doing a few things. Not updating my CV, having a full on battle with my employer as to where I can work from (five minutes from my house, or a good hour each way on unpredictable, but never enjoyable roads - which would you choose?), so I’ve not posted much recently.

But today I’m giving you three things about America.

Firstly an unexpectedly sane statement from a judge.

Secondly, the fantastically creepy spontaneous massage President Bush gave Chancellor Merkel.

And finally, possible proof of the old adage of “give them enough rope to hang themselves”:

US Ambassador John Bolton trying to artificially differentiate between two groups of people both carrying out crimes against civilians.

Deluded genius

James Dyson is a clever man. Hell, he made his first fortune by selling people a wheelbarrow with a football instead of the more traditional (and until he pointed out otherwise) perfectly adequate wheel.

He has recently announced plans for a college for engineers.

This is, at the very least, an interesting turn of events.

“Mr Dyson said the UK was no longer a centre for engineering and was at risk of losing out to China and India.

He said: “If we want to continue in the footsteps of Brunel, to innovate and engineer exciting and useful products, we need to start with education.”

He added: “Our choice now is either to see Britain’s jobs of tomorrow vanish to Mumbai or Shanghai or to educate the next generation in the skills of invention and business-building.”

Back in 1999, Dyson (the company) boasted “All Dyson machines are made in our factory in Wiltshire, and then exported. Every Dyson machine in the world has been made in the UK.”

Of course, less than 3 years later, he made 800 of his staff redundant, and outsourced Dyson vacuum production to Malaysia.

Oh, and he’ll only foot half the 22 million pound bill himself, with the government (that’s code for “tax payer”) picking up the rest.

Quite the saviour.
